LanternShade™
ApexShade™
LanternShade™ is our specialist pleated blind system designed specifically for lantern roofs – those raised glass structures that sit on top of flat roof extensions, orangeries, and modern single-storey extensions. Lantern roofs are brilliant for flooding rooms with natural light, but they create specific challenges: intense overhead sun that overheats the room, glare that makes spaces uncomfortable, and zero privacy from above. LanternShade™ solves these problems with tensioned pleated blinds that fit the angled sides and flat top of your lantern roof perfectly.
Lantern roofs have a unique structure – typically four angled sides meeting at a flat or slightly pitched top section, creating a pyramid or ridge shape. Standard blinds don’t work because of the angles and the fact that fabric needs to stay taut on sloped glazing without sagging. LanternShade™ uses specialist tensioned systems with side wires or channels that keep the pleated fabric perfectly positioned regardless of angle. Each section of your lantern roof gets its own blind that fits precisely, operates independently, and stays taut through thousands of operations.
The pleated fabric structure provides excellent insulation properties – the honeycomb air pockets reduce heat gain from that intense overhead sun in summer and prevent heat escaping through the roof in winter. Choose from hundreds of fabric options including light-filtering for gentle brightness control, thermal reflective for maximum heat blocking, or blackout for rooms where you want complete coverage options. The fabrics are specifically designed to handle the UV exposure and temperature extremes that roof glazing experiences.
LanternShade™ blinds fold neatly when raised, stacking into compact cassettes at the top of each roof section. When lowered, they create smooth, uniform coverage that blocks sun and glare while maintaining the architectural interest of your lantern roof. You’re not covering up the feature – you’re making it functional and comfortable to live with.
Engineered for Lantern Roofs: LanternShade™ is not a repurposed blind; it’s custom-designed for the specific geometry and tension needs of lantern roofs, ensuring a perfect fit and smooth operation.
Eliminates Heat and Glare: Lantern roofs cause significant heat and glare. LanternShade™ blocks solar heat, potentially reducing room temperature by 10-15 degrees, with thermal fabrics bouncing heat back for maximum comfort.
Preserves Architectural Beauty: The slim-profile pleated blinds enhance the lantern roof’s design. When retracted, they disappear into compact cassettes, maintaining the roof’s clean lines whether open or closed.
Precise Independent Control: Each section (angled sides and top) has its own independently operated blind, allowing for flexible control over sun and light as needed throughout the day.
Superior Thermal Insulation: The pleated honeycomb structure offers excellent thermal insulation, significantly reducing heat loss (up to 40-50% with honeycell fabrics) in winter, making the room more energy-efficient year-round.
Expert Installation: We handle the complexity of fitting tensioned blinds precisely to angled glazing bars, ensuring safe, proper installation without major structural work.
Cordless Safety or Motorisation: Operated via handles or cordless spring mechanisms for child safety. Motorised versions offer remote/smartphone control, ideal for hard-to-reach overhead blinds.
Built for Durability: Constructed to withstand the intense UV, temperature extremes, and constant exposure of roof glazing. Robust fabrics and tensioned systems ensure reliable performance for 10-15 years.
Every LanternShade™ system is made to order and engineered specifically for the dimensions and geometry of your lantern roof. From manufacturing through to professional installation, lead times are typically 2–4 weeks. Unlike standard window coverings, there are no off-the-shelf alternatives that deliver the same fit, performance, and finish. Precision craftsmanship takes time, and exceptional results are never rushed.
Installation Requires Specialist Expertise – LanternShade™ blinds are professionally installed by experienced specialists. Fitting tensioned roof blind systems requires precision, safe working at height, and expert knowledge to achieve a flawless finish. For larger or more complex installations, specialist access equipment such as scaffolding may be used to ensure the highest standard of installation which we charge for.
Not Complete Blackout – Even with blackout fabric, minor light leaks occur at pleats and edges. LanternShade™ provides excellent darkness (typically 85-90% light blocking) suitable for living and sleeping, but cannot achieve absolute blackout for uses like cinema rooms.
Temperature Improvement Has Limits – LanternShade™ significantly reduces solar heat gain, offering a 10-15 degree reduction in peak temperature. This vastly improves comfort, but it is not air conditioning, and ventilation may still be needed on extremely hot days.
Glass Maintenance Access Can Be Tricky – If choosing a battery-operated motor, we strongly recommend adding a solar charger to maintain charge levels throughout the year. Once installed, accessing the blind for manual charging can be difficult, particularly on lantern roofs. We also recommend a smart hub, which allows you to monitor battery levels, set schedules, and control the blinds via voice commands for a more convenient user experience.
Whats the difference between all Pleated (Cellushade) Options how you want the blind to operate, and the look you want to achieve. Window-attached systems such as Perfectly Fitted Frameless, CelluShade™ Stick-On, and Perfect Fit Frames fit directly to the window or glass. The blind moves with the window, making these systems ideal for doors, tilt-and-turn windows, and modern glazing. Freehanging systems are fitted above the window, either inside a recess or onto the wall or frame. They can cover larger areas and suit almost any window type. For specialist glazing, dedicated systems are available:
LanternShade™ is designed for roof lanterns, skylights, and angled glazing, using tensioned operation to keep the fabric secure and neat. ApexShade™ is made for triangular, apex, and gable-end windows, allowing pleated blinds to fit complex shapes.
In general, choose a window-mounted system for a sleek, integrated look, a freehanging system for larger windows, and specialist tensioned systems for roof or shaped
If you pick proper blackout fabrics, yeah, they can. Not quite 100% pitch black like you’d get with thick curtains, but we’re talking 95%+ light blocking, which is enough for most people to sleep comfortably. The only place light might sneak through is at the very edges where the blind meets the frame, but with window-attached systems like Perfect Fit, even that’s minimal. For shift workers or anyone who needs serious darkness, we’d recommend blackout pleated blinds with a window-attached system rather than free-hanging. If you want absolute total darkness, you might need to combine them with blackout curtains, but on their own they’re usually sufficient.
Absolutely. We fit loads of them in bathrooms. The key is picking a moisture-resistant fabric—we’ve got specific fabrics designed for steamy environments that won’t go moldy or discolored. The window-attached systems (Perfect Fit or Perfectly Fitted) are particularly good in bathrooms because they sit close to the window and don’t get in the way of sinks, taps, or tiles. The cellular structure actually helps prevent condensation from forming on your windows by creating an air gap. Just make sure you open the window after showers to let moisture out and give the blinds an occasional wipe if they get steamy.
Absolutely. Pleated blinds are one of the easiest window coverings to maintain. If they remain in the same position for long periods, simply give them a light dusting with a feather duster or a soft microfibre cloth from time to time. The pleated fabric doesn’t tend to trap large amounts of dust, making routine cleaning quick and straightforward. If you notice any marks or small stains, gently dab the affected area with a damp cloth. Avoid scrubbing, soaking the fabric, or using harsh cleaning products, as this can damage the material and affect its appearance. Because pleated blinds stack into such a compact space when fully opened, they generally collect less dust than bulkier window coverings such as Roman blinds or curtains. With minimal cleaning and occasional dusting, pleated blinds will continue to look great for years.
Standard pleated blinds like this model are designed for regular windows and doors rather than unusual shapes. While pleated blinds are often known for their ability to cover shaped windows, that requires specialist shaped systems made specifically for triangles, arches, circles, and other non-standard designs. This particular system is best suited to standard Aluminium windows, doors, and glazed areas where a neat, made-to-measure fit is required.
Good quality pleated blinds should last 7-10 years minimum and often longer if they’re looked after. The mechanism is simple and robust—there’s not much to go wrong. The fabric can fade over time if it’s in direct harsh sunlight every day, but our quality fabrics are designed to resist fading. The cellular structure might compress slightly over the years if you’re constantly opening and closing them, but it takes ages for that to become noticeable. Treat them gently, keep them clean, and they’ll keep looking good and working properly for years. We’ve seen pleated blinds still going strong after 15 years.
Some of them can, yeah. Certain free-hanging and roof-blind systems can be motorised with Somfy motors, which can then be connected to smart home hubs to work with Alexa, Google Home, and other smart home systems. You’d need to add a compatible hub, but once it’s set up, you can control your blinds with voice commands or through an app. It’s particularly useful for roof blinds that are hard to reach, or if you’ve got loads of conservatory blinds you want to control all at once. Motorised pleated blinds are child-safe by design too, which is a bonus. Not all systems can be motorised though, so ask us which ones work if that’s something you’re interested in.
Motorisation for Effortless Convenience Motorise Your LanternShade™ Blinds – LanternShade™ blinds are designed to enhance comfort and convenience, so why not take them one step further with intelligent motorisation? For hard-to-reach lantern roofs, motorised operation is more than a luxury—it’s an essential upgrade that allows you to control your blinds effortlessly at the touch of a button. Choose from a range of motor options, including solar-powered systems, which are ideal for roof installations and require virtually no maintenance, or mains-powered motors for continuous operation. Blinds can be controlled individually or grouped together for seamless operation across larger lantern roofs.
For even greater convenience, schedules can be programmed to automatically adjust your blinds throughout the day based on time, temperature, or sunlight levels. If you do not currently have a smart home system, a dedicated control hub is an excellent addition, allowing you to monitor battery levels, operate your blinds remotely, and create automated routines that manage everything for you. With several motorisation solutions available, our team will help you select the most suitable system for your specific lantern roof and lifestyle requirements.
Solar Powered Motors – Perfect for lantern roofs. Solar panel on roof charges battery; zero maintenance (beyond occasional cleaning). More expensive than manual-charge motors, but highly convenient for roof blinds.
Upgrade to Honeycell Thermal Fabrics – Honeycell double-layer pleats offer superior insulation (40-50% heat loss reduction) over standard pleats (30-40%). Crucial for temperature control in lantern roofs, significantly reducing energy costs, especially for large areas.
Thermal Reflective Fabrics for Maximum Heat Blocking – Ultimate solution for sun-exposed lantern roofs (south-facing/orangeries). Metallic coating reflects solar heat, keeping rooms much cooler. Combined with honeycell, provides maximum heat blocking while retaining light. Subtle metallic sheen, major performance gain.
Smart Home Integration – Transform your LanternShade™ blinds into a fully intelligent shading system with advanced smart home integration. Motorised roof blinds can be connected to your existing smart home platform, enabling automated operation based on environmental conditions and your daily routines. Create custom schedules, set temperature-based triggers, or design personalised scenes that automatically respond to changing conditions. For example, your blinds can close automatically when room temperatures exceed 25°C, helping to reduce solar gain and maintain a comfortable indoor environment. By responding intelligently to sunlight, temperature and time of day, LanternShade™ delivers a sophisticated shading solution that enhances comfort, improves energy efficiency and provides complete peace of mind.
